All 101 verified projects bucketed by $/sqft — most builds cluster near the median; the long right tail is finished interiors.

Reading the spread

  • Bare shells anchor the left edge.
  • Median $38.13/sqft — typical finished workshop territory.
  • The right tail is barndominium-grade interior finish.

How it works

Submitted by owners, checked by us.

The goal is a transparent, spam-free record of what buildings really cost — not a lead-generation funnel.

01

Someone shares

An owner submits their building type, size, city, total cost, and build year — optionally with a photo and notes.

02

We review

A moderator checks every submission for plausibility and spam before anything is published. Implausible numbers are rejected.

03

Everyone benchmarks

Approved entries join the database below — filterable by state and building type, with cost per square foot computed for easy comparison.

Community prices complement our calculator estimates: the calculator models your exact configuration, while this database shows the spread of real-world outcomes — including the site work, change orders, and finish upgrades that estimates can't see. Over time this data also sharpens our state cost guides.

FAQ

Common questions.

Where do these prices come from?

Every entry is submitted by a real owner or builder through our share form. A moderator reviews each one for plausibility before it appears here — nothing is published automatically.

Why do similar buildings show very different costs?

Site work, foundation, interior finish, utilities, and local labor rates can easily double a project budget. Treat each entry as one data point, and compare the cost per square foot rather than totals.

Can I trust these numbers for my own budget?

Use them as reference points alongside our calculator estimates. Community prices show what real projects cost in practice, while the calculator models your exact size, finish level, and state.

How do I add my own project?

Use the share form — it takes about two minutes. We ask for the building type, size, location, total cost, and build year. A photo and notes are optional but make your entry far more useful to others.

Is any personal information published?

No. We never ask for your name or email, location is city-level only, and submissions are reviewed before publication. Photos are optional and moderated.
